Analysis Of Horror Film Titles

28 weeks Later ; the title for this horror has a stereotypical effect on the audience which automatically makes them think the film to be extremely gory. This is due to the fact the red in the background could symbolise a pool of blood making the audience aware that the film is a horror and there will be quite a bit of blood involved.
The title 28 weeks later also makes you wonder as to what will happen in the film, why would the film relate to the title, has it got something to do with something happening within that period of time.

Insidious ; this makes the audience automatically see that the film is horror based on not just the colour as it relates to different things but also the lettering of the word.
The colour of the title is red but red is a colour that symbolises not just horror but blood, hatred, love, anger, danger, evil, death, fire and help etc.
on the other hand this can relate to the film title '28 weeks later' but having a twist on the audiences expectations as the film is not as gory and relating more to supernatural.

The conjuring ; With this film title i think that the audience might suggest it to be a supernatural and this is because if the title was red you would expect blood and gore. The fact that the title is black suggests death and as it says 'based on the true case file of the warrens' normally with horror films this sometimes stereotypically makes you think that exorcism is involved or some type of paranormal activity.
The title does not necessarily tell much of what is going to be involved in the film and in a way this makes the audience more drone to watch it as they want to know what is going to happen next and what the film is about.

Evil dead; The fact that the lettering contains forest aspects like branches could symbolise the whole idea that the film could be taken place in various spaces rather than the whole film taking place in one specific location. It could also relate to the forest and blood. This is because the title is bold and all in red with tints of black to show the trees and nature in the background. The name of the title 'Evil Dead' is quite hard to understand what it is that might take place in the film because it doesn't really add to much detail to the image. For example if the film is a gory film or a supernatural. The title is again red like most 'Horror film titles so this could again relate to different aspects relating to red and black.

The Exorcist; this has a stereotypical effect on the audience automatically making them insinuate that the film relates to paranormal due to the fact 'exorcist' is in the title. The title is red but the writing is not that bold, being thin. This could have an effect that blood, anger and everything that relates with red could be portrayed in the film but as the title is not bold maybe not a lot of those things could be involved. An example of this could be that maybe blood is involved in the film but not that much, so not being overly gory.

Dawn of the dead ; this has so many stereotypical aspects on the audience and this is because you can relate the title to what you think the film is about. So looking at the lettering ' Dawn of the DEAD' it makes you think that the film is about the undead. Could be about an apocalypse of the undead.
The writing again is in red symbolising blood and other subjects relating to the colour red.
It make it clear that the film is more on the gory side of its genre. This is because if it was supernatural it might have a different title and maybe a different colour to the title and boldness.

Jaws ; this shows a lot in just one picture. The way the title is laid out is showing a shark under the title, also having the colour of the title being red symbolises a lot of blood will be involved throughout the film. The fact that the shark is in the title having a human swimming above it represents death caused by the shark making the film already appear as gory and telling the audience. In a way i think the title is good but also in ways not that effective and this is because i find that it tells too much of the story to the audience already just by one picture.
The audience might not want to watch the film because they might find it would be like every other shark movie. The title is good in ways now because it could make the audience think that they know what will occur within the film, and have twist to confuse the audience and engage them, also having a completely different story line to the picture.

The Gallows ; looking at the title it doesn't tell me anything, what will occur within the film.
there are so many different aspects with this title because it could be like '28 weeks later' or 'insidious' where it could either be a gory based film or supernatural. The fact that the title is red could symbolise blood occurring within the film but maybe not a lot.
I can tell this film could maybe be a more supernatural based film due to the fact that most supernatural films have similar titles where it doesn't express what will happen in the film. On the other hand gory films include more hints within the title like maybe a picture or occasionally on some film titles the lettering would specks of blood dripping down individually. More gory films that include a lot of blood often has a bolder title giving different aspects or making it clearer to what is going to occur, whereas film titles such as 'The Gallows' includes no hints or information.

Saw ; this automatically has a stereotypical insight towards the audience, exploring blood and deaths throughout the film based on the title. The title includes 2 fingers that appear to have been chopped of. By looking at this title you would expect brutal scenes and a psycho or killer going around brutally murdering and torturing innocent people.
The colour of the title to me is portraying blood, but not fresh blood that would normally be shown as all red but worn out blood (stained blood) as if it is not a new wound. This to me is where death comes in it could relate to people rotting away covered in blood.

Overall for most horror films, i find that the title relates to the film and that it is often red or any other colour such as black. As seen on the SAW title it involves aspects from the film such as fingers where the colour is slightly mouldy with hints of green, black and red.
